If Catholicism is the original church, how do they explain their split from orthodox?

I only have one thing to say about the Catholic/Orthodox split, and that is that I think the Pope and the Patriarch of Constantinople should each begin crawling on their hands and knees toward each other and when they finally meet they should beg each others forgiveness for splitting the Church in two. The first one refusing to forgive the other should be ousted.
