Questions about oysters...?

If I buy oysters in the shell from the grocery store, can I trust that they are alive and came out of good water? Also, how long will they keep and stay alive? Do I freeze them or refrigerate them until I'm ready to cook them? If I'm steaming them until they open, will I still have a hard time opening them? I've obviously never made oysters before, so any help would be great. Thanks
