Are SF and Oakland considered "The big city"?

I'm from the bay area, and my dad is saying that I wouldn't be prepared for like in "the big city" referring to places like NYC, Los Angeles chicago,or boston. He thinks that bay area cities are more like little towns and didn't prepare him for living in Harlem years ago...I disagree. Thoughts?
